Pilonidal Sinus in Females

Pilonidal Sinus is a problem that is caused in hairy people. Many of us may think that it can happen only in males, but a lot of females are getting this troublesome disease. At our clinic we are getting many females presenting with pilonidal sinus. Most of them are in the age group 15 - 32 years. There are no differences in a male pilonidal sinus and pilonidal sinus in female. Both are due to hair that has penetrated the skin forming an abscess. This abscess may or may not be painful. Lets see how do we see and treat a pilonidal sinus in girls.

A few things that are different with a female case -

  • Female hair are a bit softer.
  • Female skin is comparatively thinner than male skin.
  • Females tend to hide their physical problems.
  • Females hesitate to visit a doctor for private part problems.

  • Cab culture (cab facility provided by big corporates) necessisates prolonged sitting in taxi/cab contributing to sinus development.
  • Presence of too much hair at tailbone region.

Hi Chitra, it is to be done at doctor's clinic only. Usually kshar sutra treatment for pilonidal sinus is an OPD procedure, means you do not need hospitalisation.

I did my surgery more than 2 months ago. In starting days the wound was big but it closes slowly. But the wound has opened again and there is pain and pus also. I think it is not cured. I am afraid and not going to surgeon any more. Is it possible to heal it without surgery. Help.
